Within hours of arriving at Sunset Stays, in her first full day, Lorraine Greene had gotten what she came for.
Barbaraâs double-confession of her name and culpability had come so much more easily than Lorraine expected, she didnât even know how to react. This was the gotcha she had longed for, but it didnât feel like a victory.
Other lives were on the line now, one as imminently as later that very day, and it seemed as though the only way to do anything about it was to put her differences with Barbara aside â at least for now â and focus on saving those who hadnât yet been taken before their time.
âI need your help, Sue,â Barbara pleaded. âI need you to go into the Doctor Richardsonâs office and look around at whatever you can see while I distract him on the outside. Iâm sorry to drag you into this and especially to worry you by saying you were in danger, but I had to think fast. Iâm just glad some newcomers got here in time and that one of them went for a walk on the first day instead of going straight to bed.â
Lorraine naturally kept quiet about the reasons for this, which were of course rooted in her plan to secure the kind of confession Barbara had just offered up on a silver platter. After a quick nod, she decided to push for a little bit more. âYouâre saying you killed a boy in a car crash?â
âIt was big news at the time,â Barbara confirmed, more than a little shame in her tone. âYou would have seen it if you were local. No one knew this, but I was pregnant when the crash happened. Iâd been trying for years and then when it finally seemed like I was getting what I always wanted, I lost him. That very day, that very hour, I had just found out it was a boy. I was trying to call my sister to tell her. I was on the way to see her, but I couldnât wait. So I took my eyes off the road for, I donât know, three seconds. But it was three seconds too long. I lost control of my vehicle and hit right into the other car. The driver was just a kid, only a week past earning his license.â
Lorraine said nothing.
âHe was driving at 32,â Barbara went on, âtwo miles an hour over the limit, so my legal team went on a PR offensive about an irresponsible teenager speeding down a residential street. You know, about how it could have been worse and how rather than my car he could have collided with one of the children who are often cycling around the area. I didnât like that line of defence, but I couldnât go to jail. My lawyer told me I could spend the next decade feeling guilty in a jail cell or I could spend my life feeling guilty on the outside. I went for number two and believe me, he was right.
